International trade shows 2026-2027: Hannover Messe, EuroShop, Bauma, Index — a guide for Greek exhibitors

The top international trade shows in Europe worth attending. Costs, audiences, logistics, and how to stand out as a Greek brand.

The short answer: for Greek exhibitors, the 5 highest-value international trade shows are Hannover Messe (industry/B2B, 200K+ attendees, €380-650/m² booth space), EuroShop (retail/exhibition design, every 3 years, premium), Bauma (construction, every 3 years, massive), Anuga (food & beverage, biennial), and Index Dubai (interior design, fastest-growing). Participating in one of these costs €30-80K total but can transform your business within a year. Below is the guide.

Why travel outside Greece

The Greek market is ~10M consumers. The European one is ~450M. In certain industries (machinery, food, fashion), the addressable market at a single international show is 50x the Greek one.

A real-world impact from one of our clients: a Greek olive oil company at Anuga 2024. Cost: €58K total participation. Result: 3 distribution agreements with German supermarket chains. First-year revenue: €1.2M. ROI: 20x.

Top 5 international shows for Greek brands

1. Hannover Messe (Germany) — Industry / Manufacturing

Frequency: Annual, April Attendees: 200K+ Cost per m²: €380-650 (depending on hall and position) Recommended booth size: 24-50 m² (smaller looks lost) Best for: Manufacturing, automation, energy, supply chain

Why Greek brands struggle: Most Greek manufacturing is small-to-medium. To stand out among German giants, you need a premium booth + clear differentiation (often “Mediterranean reliability” or “boutique production”).

Greek success-story formula: Niche specialty (Greek olive presses, specialty industrial equipment). Pre-show targeted outreach to 50-80 specific buyers.

2. EuroShop Düsseldorf — Retail / Exhibition Design

Frequency: Every 3 years (next: 2027) Attendees: 95K+ Cost per m²: €295-450 Recommended booth size: 30-80 m² Best for: Retail design, exhibition design, marketing tech, displays

For those of us in the exhibition booth industry, this IS the flagship. The best place to showcase capabilities, see global trends, network with international agencies.

3. Bauma München — Construction Equipment

Frequency: Every 3 years Attendees: 500K+ (the largest trade show worldwide) Cost per m²: €310-510 Recommended booth size: 50+ m² (outdoor space available, 100+ common) Best for: Construction equipment, mining, infrastructure

Note: Bauma is massive. Booths 200-500 m² are the norm. Smaller booths get lost.

4. Anuga Cologne — Food & Beverage

Frequency: Biennial (next: 2027) Attendees: 165K+ Cost per m²: €280-440 Recommended booth size: 18-40 m² Best for: Food producers, beverages, specialty foods

Greek advantage: Strong demand for Greek specialty foods (olive oil, honey, wine, cheese). Buyers actively seek Mediterranean products.

5. Index Dubai — Interior Design

Frequency: Annual Attendees: 38K+ (smaller but high-value) Cost per m²: €380-580 Recommended booth size: 18-30 m² Best for: Interior design, furniture, home accessories

Why Dubai matters: Gateway to MENA markets. UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait buyers. Low competition from Greek brands = easy differentiation.

Logistics: what changes outside Greece

Shipping

Booth from Greece to Germany/Netherlands: 5-7 days road freight. €1,500-3,500 for a 20 m² booth content.

To Dubai/UAE: Sea freight 3-4 weeks. €2,500-5,500. Air freight for urgent: €4,000-12,000.

Customs

EU-to-EU: Free movement. No customs. Greece-to-UAE: Customs documentation needed. Allow +5 working days. Hire a local customs broker (€400-800).

Local labour

At German shows, local labour is required for installation (union rules). Cost €60-90/hour per person, vs €25-40 in Greece. Plan for an additional €2,000-4,000.

Electrical standards

UK uses 240V/3-pin. EU uses 230V/2-pin (CEE). UAE 220V. US 110V. Booth electrics must match local standards or you’ll need transformers.

Fire & safety certificates

Each country has different requirements. EU: B-s1, d0 standard. UAE: Civil Defense approval. Always check 8 weeks ahead.

How to make a Greek brand stand out

At international shows, Greek brands have 2 paths:

Path 1: “Mediterranean Excellence” positioning

  • Use Greek heritage as advantage
  • “Family business since 1948”
  • Olive grove imagery, blue/white palette
  • Hand-crafted, premium positioning

Works for: Food, beverage, hospitality, fashion, design.

Path 2: “World-class engineering, Greek precision” positioning

  • Compete on technical merit, not heritage
  • Modern design, professional booth
  • Data-driven sales pitch
  • Avoid Greek visual clichés

Works for: Tech, manufacturing, B2B services.

Mistake to avoid: Mixing both paths. “We’re Greek heritage AND world-class tech” confuses the audience.

Pre-show strategy for international shows

3-4 months out:

  • Identify the show and confirm space (popular shows sell out 6-8 months ahead)
  • Hire English-fluent booth staff (all must be fluent)
  • Translate marketing materials (Greek → English, German, target market language)
  • Apply for visa/travel documents (some countries need 2-3 months)

2 months out:

  • Pre-show marketing (LinkedIn targeting, email campaigns, direct mail to buyers lists)
  • Book accommodation (hotel costs near major shows skyrocket)
  • Coordinate with Greek embassy/trade office (sometimes provides free meeting space, intros to buyers)

1 month out:

  • Final booth confirmation with local agency
  • Test all materials
  • Schedule on-site meetings with pre-arranged contacts

Pitfalls Greek companies make

Pitfall 1: Underestimating booth quality. Greek companies often save money on the booth, spending €15K when €30K would convert 3x more. At an international show, appearance matters a lot.

Pitfall 2: Greek-only marketing materials. Brochures only in Greek = invisible. Need English minimum + target market language.

Pitfall 3: Insufficient English fluency. Booth staff not fluent in English = lost leads. Hire interpreters if needed.

Pitfall 4: Cultural insensitivity. A “warm but persistent” Greek style can feel intrusive to Northern Europeans. Adjust approach.

Pitfall 5: Late booking. Greek companies decide 2-3 months out. Top shows sell out 6-12 months ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How long for a visa if needed? EU/Schengen Greeks: No visa for EU shows + UK (post-Brexit, ETA needed). For UAE: 60-day eVisa, 1 week processing.

Are there state subsidies for international show participation? Hellenic Exhibition Authority and SBE subsidise specific shows. Cover up to 50% of costs. Apply 6 months in advance.

Are hotels really double the usual price during Hannover Messe? Triple. €80/night becomes €250/night. Book 6 months ahead or stay in nearby cities (Hildesheim, Wolfsburg) and commute.

How many Greek exhibitors typically attend Hannover Messe? 50-80 booths. A Greek Pavilion is usually subsidised.

Are local booth contractors reliable in international cities? Yes — Düsseldorf, Hannover, Cologne have strong booth contractor markets. Quality is high, prices comparable to Athens.

How early should I start participation in an international show? 6-9 months ahead for logistics. 4-5 months ahead for booth design. 3 months ahead for pre-show marketing.

Is a German-language website important for German shows? Yes. At minimum a German landing page with contact form. Full German site = competitive advantage.

How do I handle VAT issues in the EU for temporary booth imports? Use an ATA Carnet (temporary import document). Covers EU + 70+ countries. Eliminates VAT on temporarily imported booth materials.

Is it ethical to poach staff/clients from competitors at international shows? Hiring competitor employees: ethically grey, legally fine. Poaching their announced customers: aggressive, may damage relationships.

Can I appear at an international show without booth construction? Yes with a “tabletop” presence or as part of a Greek Pavilion. Cheaper (€3K-8K) but much lower impact than a full booth.
