Exhibition booth materials: wood, MDF, aluminium, fabric — a comparison guide
A comparison of the main materials used in exhibition booths — cost, lifespan, look, weight and sustainability. Which material wins for which scenario.
The short answer: for the booth structure we use aluminium (modular systems) or timber framing (custom builds). For surfaces, painted MDF is the workhorse in 70% of projects, laminated MDF for premium look, plexiglass for transparent or backlit elements, and tension fabric for large surfaces with graphics. Each material has its place — there’s no “best” in general. Below we break down each one with cost, lifespan, and when it earns its place.
Structural materials: the booth’s skeleton
Aluminium (Octanorm, Maxima, proprietary systems)
Aluminium is the standard for modular booth structures. Pre-fabricated profiles at 30×30 mm or 40×40 mm, joined with connectors and bases.
Pros:
- Reusable 50+ times
- Light (3-5 kg/m linear)
- Easy transport (dismantled into flight cases)
- Compatible with all panel types (MDF, plexiglass, fabric)
Cons:
- Reads as “modular” (unless covered with graphics)
- Joints are visible
- Less “premium” than wood
Cost: €40-70/m linear for profiles. Connectors €5-15 each.
When we use it: Projects with 3+ reuses, modular booths where the structure is “behind the scenes”, budgets that don’t allow timber.
Timber framing
For custom builds, timber beams 5×8 cm or 6×10 cm in pine or spruce form the base. Assembled with screws, wood glue, or metal brackets.
Pros:
- Full freedom of shape (curves, angles)
- No visible structure (covered with finishes)
- More “natural” feel for premium projects
Cons:
- Reusable only 5-8 times max
- Heavy (15-25 kg/m linear in a finished panel)
- Big storage requirement
Cost: €25-45/m linear for the timber. With labour (cutting, assembly): €60-100/m total.
When we use it: One-off custom builds, premium brands, projects with unique shapes.
Steel framing
Rarely used outside of mezzanine booths where you need structural integrity. 50×50 mm box section, welded.
Cost: €60-100/m linear, plus labour.
When: Mezzanine booths, hanging signs at heights over 4 m, very heavy elements.
Surfaces: the booth’s “face”
Painted MDF
Medium Density Fiberboard, 12, 18 or 25 mm thick. Painted with enamel or acrylic for the desired colour and finish.
Pros:
- Cheap (€8-15/m² for the raw material)
- Easy to cut and shape (CNC routing)
- Good finish quality if painted properly
- Accepts graphics (printing, vinyl, sticker application)
Cons:
- Not waterproof (avoid outdoor exposure)
- Edges chip with handling
- Doesn’t reuse beyond 4-6 shows
Thickness choice: 12 mm for flat surfaces, 18 mm for structural elements, 25 mm for large spans without bracing.
Finished cost (cutting, painting, install): €25-50/m².
Laminated MDF (veneered or HPL)
MDF with a laminate surface. The laminate (High Pressure Laminate) is a 0.6-1.2 mm decorative layer with wood grain, marble pattern, or solid colour.
Pros:
- Better wear resistance
- Premium look without the painting cost
- No need to repaint every year
- Reusable 8-12 times
Cons:
- More expensive (€18-35/m² for the raw material)
- Doesn’t cut as easily (the laminate edge must be trimmed)
- Specific colours/patterns — not custom
Finished cost: €40-75/m².
Plexiglass / acrylic
Transparent or coloured plastic sheet, 3-10 mm thick.
Pros:
- Transparency for “lightbox” effects
- Takes LED backlighting beautifully
- Modern aesthetic
- Reusable
Cons:
- Expensive (€40-80/m² for 5 mm)
- Scratches easily
- Builds static — attracts dust
- Heavy
Finished cost with LED backlight: €120-200/m².
Tension fabric
Stretchable fabric over aluminium frames with a tensioning mechanism. Printed direct to fabric.
Pros:
- Very large surfaces (3×4 m without seams)
- Light
- Easy transport (rolls up)
- Backlit options
Cons:
- Not rigid (can’t be structural)
- Less “luxe” feel
- Must be tensioned correctly or it wrinkles
Cost: €40-80/m² finished.
Custom finishes: Corian, marble, real wood grain
Premium materials for high-end booths:
- Corian: Solid surface (acrylic-stone composite). €200-400/m². Rounded joints, monolithic look.
- Real marble veneer: €150-300/m². Heavy, needs proper structural backing.
- Reclaimed wood: €80-180/m². “Sustainability story”, unique grain patterns.
- Backlit onyx: €300-500/m². Translucent stone with LED behind.
When: Booths over €30,000 budget, premium brands (jewellery, automotive, fine spirits).
Booth flooring
Often underestimated. Flooring dramatically changes the experience.
Plain: carpet tiles
Cheap (€8-15/m²), easy install, comfort underfoot. Standard choice.
Wood-look vinyl
€20-35/m². More “professional” than carpet. Good for premium booths.
Raised flooring with LED inserts
€80-150/m². Hides cables and electrics, can have LED strips in the joints for drama.
Painted/sealed concrete
€15-25/m². “Industrial” feel, good for industrial brands.
Materials for graphics
Not all graphics are equal. Choice depends on the surface and visibility:
- Vinyl stickers (3M, Avery): For flat MDF surfaces. €15-25/m².
- Direct-to-substrate UV printing: Printed straight onto MDF/wood. €25-40/m². Better durability.
- Wallpaper-style print: €18-30/m² for non-vinyl applications.
- Backlit print on fabric: €45-70/m². With LED backing, dramatic effects.
- Cut vinyl (logos, headlines): €5-15 per piece. A different category.
Sustainability — lower carbon footprint materials
In 2026, sustainability is a real factor:
- FSC-certified wood: Guarantee of responsible forestry. 15-25% premium on cost.
- Recyclable aluminium profiles: Standard for modular systems. 100% recyclable.
- Bio-based MDF (no formaldehyde): 20-30% premium. Good choice for food/health brands.
- Reusable booth design (modular): The most important sustainability factor. Reduces waste 70-80%.
- Local sourcing: Reduces shipping carbon. Ask suppliers for transparency.

Frequently asked questions
Which material looks “premium” without costing premium? Laminated MDF with a wood-grain pattern — 90% of the look of real timber finish at 30% of the cost.
Is MDF safe for food/drink shows? Standard MDF contains formaldehyde resins. For food/health shows we prefer bio-based MDF or FSC-certified plywood.
How long do tension fabric graphics last? With normal handling, 6-10 reuses. Exposed to direct sunlight or intense LED, 3-5 reuses before fading.
Are LED backlit panels safe for electrical standards? All the LED panels we use are low-voltage (24V DC) and CE certified. No electrical risk.
Can I mix diverse materials in one booth? Yes — in fact it’s preferred. A pure MDF booth looks flat. A mix of MDF + plexi + fabric gives variety.
How “green” is a modular aluminium booth? With 50+ reuses and a 100% recyclable structure, modular aluminium is the most sustainable option over time.
Are plexiglass panels heavy? 5 mm plexi weighs 6 kg/m². 10 mm weighs 12 kg/m². Above 8 mm you need structural reinforcement.
Can a booth be made entirely from fabric? Yes — pure tension-fabric booths exist. Very light, easy shipping. But less rigid and some clients find them “cheap-looking”.
How long does Corian production take? +1-2 weeks compared to MDF. Corian fabrication needs CNC + specialised joints.
Is fire-retardant treatment required? At most shows, yes. Standards: B-s1, d0 for EU shows. Costs €5-10/m² extra.
